The airfield in this view lay on the open land outside San Antonio, Texas, in 1920, when the city was still a regional center for ranching, cotton, and wholesale trade. Fort Sam Houston, an Army post that had long been the city's largest federal presence, made the military a familiar part of local life, but airplanes on the edge of town were new and drew crowds of curious onlookers. That August, the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified, giving women the national vote, and San Antonio's women joined the political debates that followed. Farm families and ranch hands from the surrounding countryside often rode in to see the machines, which for many of them were the first airplanes they had ever seen up close.
