Love Field, on the northwest edge of Dallas, Texas, was taken over for military flight training in 1917, when the United States entered the First World War and the Army needed pilots quickly. In 1918 the field was busy with cadets learning to fly, and the officers pictured here would have been part of a training program that drew young men from across the South and Midwest. Dallas itself was a cotton-trading and railroad center, and its civic leaders had courted the flying school to bring federal money and prestige to the city. Local life that year was shaped by war bond drives, rationing appeals, and the influenza outbreak that closed schools and public gatherings in the autumn.
