Texas City, on the north shore of Galveston Bay, was a young port in 1913, laid out only about two decades earlier by Minnesota investors who hoped to make it a rival to Galveston. Its growth rested on the railroad and on shipping through its harbor, and its waterfront handled freight moving in and out of the Gulf region. In 1913 the airplane was still a novelty, and aviators traveled from town to town giving exhibition flights that drew large crowds. This panoramic photograph records one such aviation group posed before the town, a sign of how quickly the new machines were reaching small Texas communities.
