Atlantic City in 1909 was a summer resort whose newest draw was Million Dollar Pier, opened in 1906 by showman John L. Young with its theaters, bands, and amusements at the water's edge. It competed with the older Steel Pier and with the large hotels along Pacific Avenue for the same seasonal crowds. Much of the town's living depended on a few hot months, when hotel staff, boardinghouse keepers, and rolling-chair operators worked long days to earn their year's income. Residents also watched the new world of aviation and aerial photography with curiosity, since both were still novelties. From this height the resort looks compact, squeezed between the Atlantic and the marshes of the back bay.
