Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1909 was one of the most visited seaside resorts on the East Coast, a place where summer crowds arrived by rail and filled the boardwalk, hotels, and amusement piers. The city had grown up around tourism after the Camden and Atlantic Railroad brought visitors from Philadelphia in the 1850s, and by the early 1900s its economy rested almost entirely on hotels, boarding houses, restaurants, and entertainment. The boardwalk, which dated to 1870, ran for miles along the beach, and large hotels and piers stood along its length. Residents knew the town for its seasonal rush and its wide, flat shoreline, and they were already sensing that the newer technologies of flight and photography would become part of the resort's attractions.
