In 1909, Princeton, New Jersey, was a small college town in Mercer County, where the university's campus and its athletic fields drew most of the local attention. Woodrow Wilson, who had led the university since 1902, was still its president that spring, and he would leave the post in 1910 to run for governor of New Jersey. The Yale-Princeton baseball game was one of the spring fixtures that brought alumni, students, and visitors from farther away onto the university grounds. Townspeople in Princeton and nearby Trenton followed the rivalry closely, and the college's prominence made the town's identity depend heavily on its school. Few other industries shaped daily life there, so the campus, its sports, and its visiting crowds set the rhythm of the season.
