New Haven, Connecticut, in 1910 was a city of roughly 130,000 people, known for manufacturing, with arms makers, hardware and clock firms, and carriage works employing many of its workers. Yale University had shaped the city's character for more than two centuries, and its spring baseball team drew close attention from students, alumni, and townspeople alike. Electric trolley lines carried riders between the college grounds and the factory districts, making it easier for crowds to reach games.
