This panoramic photograph records the Harvard-Yale football game in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1914, with Harvard's 36 points marking the result. In 1914, New Haven was a city of factories, including the Winchester Repeating Arms works, and of a large population of workers, merchants, and Yale students and alumni. The college rivalry with Harvard drew fans from across New England and New York, and a game day turned the city's streets and athletic grounds into a public occasion. That autumn, news from Europe, where war had broken out that summer, reached American readers daily, though the crowd on the field was focused on the contest. For people in New Haven, the annual meeting with Harvard was one of the year's best-known events.
