Harvard and Yale's football game, pictured here in 1911, was by then one of the most anticipated events in New England, pitting two of the oldest colleges in the country against each other each November. Harvard had opened its horseshoe-shaped concrete stadium in Cambridge in 1903, one of the first large steel-and-concrete collegiate stadiums, and crowds of alumni, students, and townspeople filled such grounds for the rivalry. Football was a major campus concern in these years, and the deadly injuries of the 1905 season had pushed colleges toward rule changes, including the legalizing of the forward pass in 1906. For Massachusetts residents, the game was a yearly occasion that filled hotels and streetcars and drew wide attention in the newspapers.
