Harvard and Yale played to a 0-0 tie on November 25, 1911, and this panoramic photograph captures the crowd at the Massachusetts meeting of the two oldest rivals in American college football. The series had been an autumn fixture since 1875, drawing alumni, students and families from across New England and New York who treated the game as a social occasion. The sport had been under pressure since the serious injuries and deaths of 1905, and rule changes such as the legalized forward pass in 1906 were meant to open up play. A crowd this large also reflected the wealth and schooling of the college towns that hosted the rivalry.
