Harvard and Dartmouth met on the football field in 1903, when Cambridge and the wider Boston area were building new athletic facilities and crowds for college contests were growing. That June, Harvard had dedicated its horseshoe-shaped stadium in Allston, a large bowl of concrete and earth that could hold far more spectators than the old yard fields. Across Massachusetts the economy rested on shoe factories, textile mills, and the railroads that moved their goods, and many fans reached the game by train from Boston and nearby towns. Dartmouth, a small college in Hanover, New Hampshire, sent its team and supporters to Cambridge for such matchups, which turned the rivalry into a regional occasion. For families, alumni, and students in the Boston area, an autumn afternoon at the college game was a popular public pastime.
