This 1911 panoramic view records a Harvard–Yale football game at Harvard Stadium in Allston, on the Boston side of the Charles River, a field the two universities had shared since the stadium opened in 1903. By then the rivalry was the centerpiece of New England's autumn sporting calendar, drawing alumni, students and families from across the region. Boston and its neighboring cities were growing fast, supported by textile mills, shoe factories and the trolley lines that linked downtown with Cambridge. Football was still young and rough, with rules shifting every few seasons, and newspapers followed each Saturday result closely. For Massachusetts residents, a game against Yale was less a sporting match than an annual test of college pride.
