Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1910 was one of New England's leading manufacturing cities, with factories producing wire, looms, machine tools, and abrasives, and its population had passed 145,000 at the census that year. Immigrants from Ireland, Sweden, French Canada, and Italy filled the mills and the neighborhoods around them, and city politics reflected both older Yankee families and newer ward-based voters. Residents took particular pride in Lake Quinsigamond, where oarsmen had raced since the 1870s and where the Harvard-Yale boat race was rowed for many years. Public parks and boulevards gave working families a place to gather on warm afternoons, and sporting crowds were a regular part of that summer life.
