Boston's American League club, known then as the Boston Americans, was only a few seasons old in 1903, having joined the American League in 1901. The team played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds near the Back Bay, drawing fans from a city of more than half a million people whose shoe factories, wharves, and streetcar lines shaped daily life. That autumn the Americans won the pennant under manager Jimmy Collins and met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, which Boston won five games to three. Newspapers carried the results across the city, and the series quickly became a civic event as much as a sporting one.
