In 1904 the Boston Americans were in their fourth season in the American League and were still playing at the Huntington Avenue Grounds near the Back Bay. The city had grown past half a million residents, and its shoe factories, harbor trade, and streetcar lines set the rhythm of working life. That spring Cy Young pitched a perfect game against the Philadelphia Athletics at Huntington Avenue, a feat that drew fans and newspaper columns across the city. The club finished the season second to the New York Highlanders, a close race that kept Boston's followers arguing about pennants and pitching rotations long after the final game.
