The Yale Bowl, set in a former quarry on the outskirts of New Haven, Connecticut, opened in 1914 as the university's new football stadium. Yale had outgrown its older field, and the bowl-shaped arena was built to hold tens of thousands of spectators, making it one of the largest sporting venues in the country. New Haven was then an industrial city of more than 100,000 people, with factories producing firearms, hardware, and rubber goods, and trolley lines carried fans out to the games. For the city and the university alike, Saturday football had become a civic occasion, and the new bowl gave that tradition a home sized for its growing crowds.
