Yale's varsity crew of 1912 belonged to a New Haven that had grown into a city of more than 130,000 people by the 1910 census. Its factories, including the Winchester Repeating Arms works that turned out rifles and cartridges, gave the city a industrial base that sat beside the university's campus on the green. Rowing was among the most followed college sports of the day, and the Yale-Harvard race on the Thames River at New London drew large crowds and special trains each summer. Students and alumni followed the eight-oared crew closely, and a strong boat was a point of pride for the whole university. The photograph records the squad as the Yale men of that season saw themselves, shortly before the American entry into the First World War would reshape campus life.
