Long Key Fishing Camp, at Layton on Long Key in Monroe County, Florida, was a winter retreat for anglers in 1912, the year Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway finished its Overseas Railroad to Key West. The rail line made the Keys reachable by train for the first time, and it brought visitors from the North who came to fish the shallow flats and channels for tarpon and other game fish. Before the railroad, getting to a camp like this meant a slow boat trip from the mainland, so the new line opened the island to guests who could travel by rail and stay for weeks. The camp's guests would have known Long Key chiefly as a fishing destination, with its modest accommodations and boats hired by the day. The Keys in these years were otherwise sparsely settled, relying on fishing, sponging, and small trade with Key West.
