Key West in 1912 was the western end of a railroad that had only recently been extended across the Florida Keys. Henry Flagler's crews had built the Seven Mile Bridge, a long reinforced-concrete span over open water, so trains could carry freight and passengers south from the mainland. At Trumbo Point, cars and cargo were transferred to steamers bound for Havana and other ports, and merchants on the island watched goods that had once come only by sea begin to arrive on a fixed schedule. The town's waterfront and rail yards still reflected its long life as a seafaring port.
