Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1912 sat on a high plateau, and the town shared its daily life with its twin across the Virginia line. Mine officials, merchants, and railroad clerks crossed that boundary as easily as the freight did, so the two communities functioned much like one market. Many of the men who worked the nearby hollows were immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, and their boardinghouses and churches gave the streets a crowded, many-tongued character. Black residents built their own institutions, including the Bluefield Colored Institute, which offered local families schooling beyond the elementary grades. The panorama shows a town still pushing its edges outward.
