Key West, Florida, in 1912 was a island port at the end of a long chain of keys, and that January the first passenger train rolled onto the island over Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, which had been built across the Florida Keys from the mainland. The line replaced a slow route by steamer and mail boat, and islanders had waited years for it. Key West's economy still rested largely on cigar making, carried on by Cuban and Spanish-speaking workers in factories around the town, along with fishing, shipping, and the Navy's presence at its naval station. The railroad promised to bring fresh goods, tourists, and quicker mail, and residents took pride in the connection to the mainland. A hurricane in 1935 later destroyed much of the overseas line, and the highway that replaced it followed much of the same route.
