Hialeah Park, the Miami Jockey Club's racetrack in Hialeah, Florida, opened in 1930, a few miles northwest of Miami, at a time when the region's land boom had already collapsed following the 1926 hurricane and the bank failures of the late 1920s. In 1931 the Florida Legislature moved to legalize pari-mutuel wagering, and the track became a centerpiece of the state's effort to draw winter visitors and money during the Depression. Hialeah's grounds were known for their Spanish-style architecture and the flamingos kept in the infield, which made the track a stop for wealthy northern owners and sportsmen who wintered in South Florida. Locals in Miami and Hialeah would have known the track as a new source of jobs, tourist traffic, and betting revenue in a county still recovering from the boom's bust.
