Butte, Montana, in 1914 was a mining city built on copper, with its hillside shafts and smelter smoke supplying a national market for electrical wire and other goods. Its population had grown quickly over the previous two decades, drawing miners from Cornwall, Ireland, Italy, Finland, and the Balkans, and the city was among the largest in the Rocky Mountain West. Labor relations were tense that year, as they were across western mining districts, and the Western Federation of Miners had a strong presence in Butte. Racing was a popular pastime for residents who wanted a break from shift work, and a jockey club's grounds on the edge of town gave the community a place to gather for races and public entertainment.
