Butte, Montana, in 1914 was a copper mining city whose hillside mines and smelters drew workers from across Europe and the rest of the country. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company dominated the local economy, and the city's streets, saloons, and union halls reflected a population that worked hard underground and spent its free hours on sports and clubs. Motorcycles were still a novelty in 1914, so a club of riders posing together signaled a new kind of leisure that appealed to young men with some money and a taste for speed. The Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain towns of that decade were bound together by railroads, and Butte residents knew their city chiefly as the place that produced much of the nation's copper.
