Asheville, North Carolina, in 1911 was a mountain resort town drawing visitors for its cool air and scenery, and many arrived by rail on the Southern Railway's lines through the Blue Ridge. Tuberculosis sanatoriums and hotels catered to patients and well-off guests, while the Vanderbilt family's Biltmore estate, completed in the 1890s, gave the surrounding region its best-known landmark. A country club of this kind offered the leisured set a place for golf, tennis, and social gatherings, reflecting how the town's economy leaned on tourism and seasonal residents rather than heavy manufacturing. Local residents of the period would have known Asheville as a place where health seekers, hotel guests, and longtime families mixed in its streets and clubhouses.
