Morehead City, on Bogue Sound in Carteret County, North Carolina, is the setting for this 1919 view of the Naval Air Station at Camp Glenn. The town had grown up around its rail terminus, the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad, which carried fish, naval stores, and farm goods from the interior to a harbor on the Sound. During the First World War the Navy set up a seaplane station here to fly anti-submarine patrols over Atlantic shipping lanes, and the nearby Army training camp drew soldiers and workers into the local economy. By 1919, with the armistice signed the previous November, the wartime flying program was winding down, and residents who had known the town as a quiet fishing and shipping port were adjusting to the sudden departure of crowds, contracts, and the young pilots who had filled its streets.
