Lakehurst, New Jersey, was a sandy, pine-covered stretch of Ocean County in 1924, and the Navy's air station there was still young, having been established as a lighter-than-air base only a few years earlier. Its large hangars and open field were built for rigid airships, which the Navy saw as a way to scout the Atlantic and extend its reach far beyond the fleet. The station drew Navy men, machinists, and civilian workers to a area that had little industry before, and nearby towns relied on the payroll and the traffic it brought. That fall, the German-built airship later named USS Los Angeles was delivered to the station as part of postwar reparations, a sign of how seriously the Navy was investing in this kind of flight.
