Kelly Field, on the southwest side of San Antonio, Texas, was one of the busiest aviation training grounds in the country in January 1919. The Army had established it in 1916 as a flying school, and during the First World War thousands of cadets learned to fly and maintain aircraft there, with hangars and barracks spreading across the prairie. The armistice in November 1918 brought demobilization, so the field was shifting from wartime mass training toward a smaller peacetime force. San Antonio had long depended on its military posts, cotton and cattle commerce, and a large Mexican American community, and residents knew the field as the city's most visible link to the new air age.
