In 1920, San Antonio was still shaped by the military buildup of the First World War, when the Army established several aviation training fields on the city's outskirts. Kelly Field and Brooks Field, both opened in 1917, trained pilots and mechanics for the Army's air arm, and the city's wholesale trade, cattle and cotton markets, and rail connections gave it a broader economy beyond the bases. Many residents knew the flying fields as a source of paychecks, new construction, and a steady stream of young airmen in town on weekends. The aircraft of that era were open-cockpit biplanes, and flying was still a novelty to most people in the South and West. Postwar demobilization that year cut back the wartime staff, leaving the fields to face an uncertain future.
