In 1920 San Antonio had about 160,000 residents, making it one of the largest cities in Texas, and its West Side was home to a large Spanish-speaking community, many of whose families had come north during the Mexican Revolution. Downtown, the Alamo and the winding San Antonio River drew visitors and gave the city its mix of Anglo, Spanish and Mexican traditions. Prohibition took effect nationwide in January 1920, closing saloons and breweries from Texas to Maine. For most families, an airplane rising over a dusty field on the city's edge was still a rare and startling sight.
