Love Field, on the northwest edge of Dallas, Texas, was a young Army flying field in 1918, established the previous year and named for Lieutenant Moss L. Love, an Army aviator killed in a 1913 crash. Its hangars and training aircraft, including Curtiss JN-4 trainers used widely in American flight schools, reflected the wartime push to produce pilots for the Army. Dallas was then a major cotton-marketing and banking city, and residents followed the war through bond drives and home-front campaigns. Townspeople often came out to watch takeoffs and landings, making aviation a novelty in a city whose economy still rested on cotton, rail freight and wholesale trade. The Armistice in November 1918 soon eased the urgency of the training program.
