Fairfield Aviation Field, on the open farmland of Fairfield Township outside Dayton, Ohio, took shape in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. The Army Signal Corps was then building up its air arm, and Dayton, already home to the Wright brothers' legacy and a growing list of manufacturers, was a natural place to train pilots and mechanics. Dayton's factories, including the National Cash Register works and the metalworking shops that supplied wartime orders, drew workers from the surrounding countryside and gave the region a strong industrial base. The city was still recovering from the 1913 flood that had devastated its downtown, and many residents had come to see flood control and civic rebuilding as pressing concerns. For local people in 1917, the new field meant young men in uniform, unfamiliar machines overhead, and a sudden link between farm country and the national war effort.
