In September 1925, the Navy's rigid airship *Shenandoah* broke apart in a thunderstorm over farm country in eastern Ohio, and this view shows the wreckage on the ground near Ava in Noble County. Fourteen of the 29 men aboard died, including Lieutenant Commander Zachary Lansdowne, the ship's commander. The *Shenandoah* was the first rigid airship built in the United States, and the Navy had hoped it would show that lighter-than-air craft could serve the fleet. Rural Ohio in the mid-1920s was a landscape of farms and coal mines, and few residents had seen an airship up close, so the crash drew onlookers from surrounding towns. The loss led the Navy to reassess its airship program.
