Springfield, Ohio, in 1917 was a manufacturing city in the Miami Valley, with a economy built largely on farm machinery. The Champion works, by then part of International Harvester, employed many local workers, and the Crowell Publishing Company also operated a large plant there. The city's fire department, shown in this photograph, protected a growing industrial town that had long lived with the threat of floods from the nearby Mad River. Across the country in the 1910s, fire departments were replacing horse-drawn engines with motor apparatus, and in April 1917 the United States entered the First World War, turning local attention toward the war effort.
