Cleveland marked its 125th anniversary in 1921, a milestone counted from Moses Cleaveland's 1796 survey of the Western Reserve shoreline on Lake Erie. By then the city had grown into one of the largest in the country, with a population near 800,000, and its economy rested on steel, shipbuilding, oil refining, and the lake freight that moved ore and coal through its harbor. Residents were also enjoying the postwar boom, and baseball was a major civic pastime that drew crowds to neighborhood grounds like Dunn Field. The anniversary year encouraged pride in the city's growth from frontier outpost to industrial center.
