San Antonio in 1916 was a major Army town, and Fort Sam Houston on its north side was the center of military life in South Texas. The 1st Aero Squadron, one of the Army's first air units, was stationed there that year, and its airmen flew a handful of early aircraft from fields near the post. The unit's work took on new urgency after Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, in March 1916, when the Army pushed into northern Mexico to pursue him and the squadron was among the forces called to support that expedition. Across the city, the presence of soldiers, pilots, and mechanics shaped the local economy, with boarding houses, shops, and streetcar lines serving the post. Residents who lived near the fort would have known the place as a training ground where the Army was testing whether airplanes could serve in war.
