In May 1912, Houston was a fast-growing cotton-trading and railroad city on Buffalo Bayou, with a population near 80,000 and a business district that had grown up around its rail lines and wholesale houses. Cotton moved through the city to Gulf ports and mills, and the rail network that met there made Houston one of the main shipping centers of the South. Civic life was centered on downtown merchants, city government, and the growing number of churches, schools, and social clubs. A large fire recorded on May 19, 1912, would have been a serious local event for residents, who depended on those commercial blocks for work and supplies and who were still building up their fire protection as the city expanded.
