In 1909, the country club on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina, reflected a city still recovering from the Civil War, the decline of its cotton and rice fortunes, and the 1886 earthquake that had damaged much of its older core. The harbor, the port, and the phosphate trade supplied much of the city's paid work, while planters' heirs, merchants, and professional men increasingly turned to golf, tennis, and club dances as signs of leisure and standing. A clubhouse set among open grounds gave families a place to see and be seen, and the scene shows how the city's social life had shifted toward organized recreation. Charlestonians of the day knew their city for its harbor, its colonial-era architecture, and a social calendar shaped by a small circle of established families.
