Racine, Wisconsin, in 1911 was a lakeshore manufacturing city whose economy rested heavily on farm machinery, with the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company among its best-known employers. Its harbor on Lake Michigan handled freight, and rail lines connected the city to Chicago and Milwaukee. Golf had grown popular with American families by the 1910s, and the Racine Country Club offered local professionals and their households a place to gather on weekends, away from the factory floor. Civic and social life in the city was closely tied to the industrial families who supported its clubs, churches and parks.
