Hialeah Park, on the northwest edge of Miami in Dade County, Florida, was a winter racing destination in 1937, a decade after its 1930 opening. Florida had legalized pari-mutuel wagering in 1931, and the track drew wealthy northern visitors who came south for the season, along with local bettors who were looking for work and entertainment during the Great Depression. Its landscaped infield was known for the flamingos kept there, which became one of the park's signature attractions and helped set it apart from the other tracks in the state. A panoramic view of the grounds would have shown the grandstand and track to people in the region as a symbol of the Miami area's growing reputation as a resort and sporting center.
