Cubs Park, on Chicago's North Side in the Lake View neighborhood, was photographed in July 1929, a summer when the city was still in the middle of the Prohibition years and under Mayor William Hale Thompson's Republican administration. The ballpark had been built in 1914 as Weeghman Park for the Federal League, and the Chicago Cubs had moved in and taken it over, though it was renamed Wrigley Field in 1927 after chewing-gum manufacturer P.K. Wrigley bought the club. Chicago's economy then rested on meatpacking at the stockyards, steel mills on the South Side, and a rail network that made the city the country's main transportation hub. Crowds at the park were drawn from neighborhoods reached by streetcar and elevated lines, which made a summer game a common weekday or Sunday outing for working families.
