Princeton, New Jersey, in 1907 was a small borough whose economy and daily rhythm rested largely on Princeton University, which then enrolled only men and drew many of its students from wealthy families in the Northeast. Woodrow Wilson, the university's president from 1902 to 1910, was pressing reforms in the curriculum and the residential life of undergraduates, and the campus debates over those changes were closely followed by alumni and townspeople alike. Intercollegiate athletics, baseball among them, drew large crowds of students, alumni, and local residents, and a contest with Yale carried the weight of a long and competitive rivalry. Spectators in 1907 would have known the university as the town's chief institution, and a game against New Haven was a major occasion on the local calendar.
