In 1910 Newark, New Jersey, was a crowded river city where the Passaic River and the Morris Canal still carried coal, iron and lumber toward the warehouses and mills along the waterfront. The canal, which would close in 1924, ran through the older industrial wards and remained a working link to the Delaware and the interior of the state. Residents crossed the city on streets busy with delivery wagons and streetcars, and Military Park in the downtown core served as a gathering place for rallies, band concerts and holiday crowds. For people living there, Newark was a place where river commerce, rail yards and a dense mix of working families defined daily life.
