In 1910 the ballpark pictured here was Hilltop Park at Broadway and West 165th Street in Washington Heights, Manhattan, home of the New York Highlanders, a team that would not take the Yankees name until 1913. Built on a rise in 1903, the park was one of the city's main sporting grounds in the years when New York was growing quickly northward and new subway lines and streetcars were carrying more residents uptown. The Highlanders shared the city's baseball audience with the Giants at the Polo Grounds and the Dodgers in Brooklyn, and games drew crowds of working men and families who came by trolley and on foot. Hilltop Park was a modest wooden and steel grandstand set against open blocks, and it stood for a few more seasons before the club moved downtown across the Harlem River to the Polo Grounds in 1913.
