Washington Heights in 1910 was a neighborhood in transition, with Irish and German families, small shops along Broadway, and new apartment houses replacing farmland and old country estates. Mayor William Gaynor, a former judge who took office at the start of 1910, dominated the city's newspapers that year, and uptown readers followed his disputes with city officials closely. Fans heading to the ballpark could also see the campus of Columbia University, which had moved to Morningside Heights in the late 1890s and stood a few miles south. For a working family, an afternoon game was one of the cheapest outings available, and the park on its rise became a local landmark that people in the district recognized from blocks away.
