Newark, New Jersey, in 1910 was the largest city in the state, with about 347,000 residents and a economy built on manufacturing. Its factories produced leather goods, jewelry, beer and thread, and rail lines such as the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Central Railroad of New Jersey carried those goods to New York and beyond. Insurance was also a major employer, since the Prudential company kept its headquarters downtown. Trolleys carried residents across the city to ballparks and shopping districts, while immigrants from Germany, Ireland and Italy, along with a growing Jewish community, shaped its neighborhoods and local politics.
