Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was shaped by the livestock trade, and the stockyards in the West Bottoms, where the Kansas and Missouri rivers meet, ranked among the largest in the country. Cattle, hogs and sheep arrived by rail from the Plains and were penned and sold before going on to packing houses, several owned by national meatpacking firms. Railroad tracks crowded the low ground along the rivers, hauling animals in and dressed meat out, and the trade gave the city a reputation as a major cattle market second only to Chicago. Stockyard workers, drovers, commission men and packinghouse hands made up a large part of the working population, and residents near the bottoms knew the smell and noise of the pens well. Beyond the yards, the city was growing toward a population of roughly a quarter million, with streetcars and downtown commerce expanding steadily.
