Omaha's Union Stock Yards, in the neighboring city of South Omaha, handled a large share of the livestock shipped across the northern plains by 1914. The yards opened in 1884, and their pens, scales, and rail sidings drew cattle, hogs, and sheep from Nebraska, Iowa, and the Dakotas to be sold and shipped east. Meatpacking plants, including Cudahy and Swift, clustered nearby, so the stockyards and the packing houses gave South Omaha much of its payroll and its identity as a working town. Railroads such as the Union Pacific and the Burlington carried the animals and the dressed meat that moved through the district. South Omaha remained a separate city until it was annexed to Omaha in 1915.
