Camp Lewis, a new Army cantonment on the prairie south of Tacoma near American Lake, was built in 1917 after the United States entered the First World War that April. Its construction drew thousands of workers into a region already known for lumber, shingle mills, and the Puget Sound shipping trade, and Tacoma merchants and newspapers followed its growth closely. The camp was named for Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which tied the new post to the Pacific Northwest's early history. Draftees and volunteers from across the Northwest trained there in the months that followed, and the camp's arrival reshaped local business and housing for several years. The photograph captures the camp at the start of that rapid buildup, when raw barracks and rows of tents still stood on open ground.
