The Remount Station at American Lake, outside Tacoma, Washington, took shape in 1913 as the Army looked for places to breed, train, and hold horses and mules for its cavalry and artillery. Tacoma had become a Northern Pacific railroad terminus in 1873 and a port on Commencement Bay, and its economy rested on sawmills, shingle plants, and a copper smelter that handled ore from distant mines. Residents took pride in their city's commercial ambitions and its rivalry with Seattle, a few dozen miles north. Horses were still essential to the Army in 1913, so the station's corrals and stables gave the region a new military presence just south of the city. A few years later, the American Lake grounds expanded into the large training camp named for Meriwether Lewis.
